The passion fruit is so-called because it is one of the many species of passionflower. Around 1700, the name was given by missionaries in Brazil while using the flower as an educational aid, trying to convert the indigenous inhabitants to Christianity and illustrate the crucifixion of Christ (i.e. the crown of thorns). The three-day life-span of the flower also mirrored the three days before the resurrection of Jesus, on what we now call Easter.
